Remember yesterday when the FT was complaining that Euro leaders were not doing enough to promote the Constitution?
Well, the Spanish government seems to step into full gear: this weekend will be the start of a gigantic PR operation to familiarize Spaniards with the text. Spain is voting on Feb. 20. True, Spaniards are traditionally europhiles, and this referendum is non-binding anyway, but I think it is pretty neat to witness such an effort.
The Independent has this to say:
The half-time entertainment at Sunday's match between La Liga rivals Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid will be devoted to a celebration of the document. (...) Starting from Friday, personalities whose faces are familiar to millions of Spaniards will read the text in broadcasts at noon every day. They include the footballers Johann Cruyff and Emilio Butragueño and the radio journalists Luis del Olmo and Iñaki Gabilondo.
I am sure you have in mind lots of events that could be used to promote the Constitution among Euro citizens. I propose we use the infamous Eurovision Song Contest ( former Grand Prix
d'Eurovision de la Chanson ). Yes, you may laugh, but remember that dozens of millions of people actually watch it every year, even if to laugh at it. Let's use its coming 50th anniversary for a useful purpose.
I can see from here the wild choregraphies of Swedish singers on songs celebrating the common market. Or think about a Portuguese heavy metal band extolling the virtues of the Commission. Delightful!
